Casey Key Description (continued)

Discover a luxurious, secluded island paradise lifestyle

Casey Key, Florida is a unique and secluded 8 mile long barrier island. It is located in Nokomis, just 15 miles south of downtown Sarasota. Residents here enjoy an unspoiled, tropical key with private beaches. This secluded paradise is surrounded by water with the Gulf of Mexico to the west and Sarasota Bay to the east. The north bridge onto the island is one of two known swing bridges dating back to the 1920s. In addition, there is an additional bridge connecting the south end to the mainland.

Casey Key is uncrowded, quiet and offers privacy that is unmatched. Real estate is comprised almost entirely of single-family homes. There are no high rises or traffic jams on this island. Waterfront properties range from simple beach cottages to lavish estates. The island maintains its pristine, natural environment through a proactive approach to legislation. The conservation areas found here are protected by law.

There are less than 400 residences, composed of both full time and part-time residents from all over the world. Casey Key offers one of Florida's most prestigious addresses and has the unique blend of elegance, wealth, beauty and solitude. Architectural styles include Spanish Mediterranean, Key West, old Florida and contemporary. Numerous celebrities own beach houses on the island. Property owners have the reputation of being friendly yet highly respectful of privacy.

Waterfront Lots

With breathtaking and dynamic views of the Gulf, Bay or even both, Casey Key land is highly desirable, yet extremely limited in supply. The ground elevations are typically higher here than most neighboring barrier islands. Parcels on the island run from one half to five acres and range anywhere from $795,000 to $6.9 million per parcel. Land includes private beachfront parcels, tranquil bay fronts or both.

History

In 1849, on the first maps of the area, the island was referred to as Chaise's Key. The island received its unusual name from a growth of trees on the island facing the Gulf of Mexico. Seamen swore that the clump of trees looked exactly like a chaise. The name was later changed to Casey Key after Captain John Charles Casey. Captain Casey was assigned to the area to help remove the Seminole Indians. For a short period in the 1920s, the name was changed by developer EC Warren to Treasure Island. The Treasure Island Bridge at the north end of the Island was constructed and opened in 1923. After the land boom, residents later decided to revert to the current name. Beach house owners here often refer to the area as "Casey."

Nearby Attractions

Living on Casey Key provides ultimate privacy, yet major grocery stores, shopping and dining are all available within minutes. For a detailed view, take a look at our Casey Key Florida map. In addition, all of the amenities and cultural activities in Sarasota are only a short drive from home. Residents on the north end of the island can walk along the beach to Siesta Key over Midnight Pass. Siesta Key Beach was rated the 2011 best beach in the USA. St. Armands is also nearby, where you can enjoy exquisite shopping and five-star dining. It is no wonder why this is such a spectacular place to live.
